Vietnamese Meatballs in Tomato Sauce (Xíu Mại)

How to make Vietnamese meatballs in tomato sauce, or Xíu Mại! Flavorful meatballs in umami sauce! These are so delicious when paired with a baguette. I prefer this over a meatball sub any day! 🥖

🍖 Meatballs

  • 1 lb ground beef & pork mix
  • 2 shallots, minced
  • 2 green onions
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch
  • 1 tbsp fish sauce
  • 2 tsp chicken bouillon
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • tsp brown sugar
  • 1 cup jicama, diced

🍅 Sauce

  • 2–3 tomatoes, diced
  • ¼ onion
  • 1 tbsp garlic
  • 1 cup tomato sauce
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • ½ cup water
  • 2 red chilies, minced (optional)
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tbsp fish sauce
  • Dash of black pepper

👩‍🍳 Directions

  • In a bowl, mix ground meat with seasonings and diced jicama. Form into meatballs.
  • Prepare tomatoes, onion, and garlic by dicing or mincing as needed.
  • Heat oil in a pan. Sauté onions for 2–3 minutes, then add garlic.
  • Add diced tomatoes and cook for another 3–4 minutes until softened.
  • Add the meatballs into the pan and sear lightly.
  • Pour in tomato sauce, tomato paste, and water. Bring to a boil.
  • Cover and simmer for 10–12 minutes until meatballs are fully cooked.
  • Toast baguette while sauce is simmering.
  • Add chilies, fish sauce, black pepper, and sugar to the pan. Stir to combine.
  • Let simmer for another 2 minutes, then serve hot with toasted baguette!
